Things We’ve Noticed Norwegians Do…

We’ve been here just over 3 months now and we’ve made some observations about the people of Norway…obviously we are generalising and not all Norwegians follow these traits… it’s just based on our experience so far!

  • They leave their curtains open at night
  • They also seem to leave their lights on through the night (they do where we live!)
  • Caviar is part of the every day diet – although I’m told it’s not the Russian variety!
  • Instead of saying “Goodbye” they say “Have it good”
  • They eat lunch at 11am in the morning (the second breakfast)
  • They complicate the process of telling time (see post on time)
  • They ski to work in the summer – using rollerskis (here’s a photo)
  • They love eating brown, caramel tasting cheese (see post on brown cheese)
  • Queuing has two extremes…
    • The ticket version (in banks, pharmacies and info centers) is very formal, polite and considerate
    • The freeform version (on trains, planes and buses) is up to you – just make sure you get on!
  • They drink a lot of black coffee – apparently one of the biggest coffee drinking nations in the world
  • They buy a lot of candles – the candle section in IKEA is enormous
  • Norway must have more language dialects per capita than any other country in the world – and none of them really sound the same – we’re learning Bokmål
  • Norwegians have a reputation of being somewhat introvert and difficult to get to know but that has been far from our experience…they have been very welcoming and friendly
  • They are very proud of their flag
  • They eat sheeps head in the Autumn
  • They have bicycle trailers for their children to travel in or they’ll have half a bike clipped onto the back so the child can help peddle
  • They leave work at 4.00pm ish to make the most of the evening with family

Extras…

  • Julia added = “How about; when making a packed lunch, they don’t make sandwiches with two slices of bread and filling in between, instead they cover a single slice of bread with cheese or whatever, then put a piece of greaseproof paper on top and repeat.”

Let me know if you have any others to add!
